The seers of Dathathreya heritage have uninterruptedly carried forward the teachings of Guru Punarvasu Athreya for 3500 years.

They have been engaged in the dynamic processes of svarūpa rakṣā (preservation of the Ayurvedic literature in its original form), artha rakṣā (preservation of the intended meaning of the Ayurvedic literature) and prayoga rakṣā (the application of the Ayurvedic principles as enumerated in the śāstras). Through the continuous responses of the Ayurvedic physicians to global health challenges, they have equipped themselves in handling disease prevention (svastha vṛtta), cure of diseases (ātura vṛtta), and developed Ayurvedic applications for industrial disasters, epidemics, pandemics, traumatic neurological conditions, and critical care. SWAMI DHANANJAYA DATHATHREYA DEV, son of SWAMI MRITUNJAYA DATHATHREYA DEV, is the current head of this heritage. He has five disciples, the youngest being our chief physician – VAIDYARATNAM DR. RAGHAVAN RAMANKUTTY.

Dr. Shyam Raghavan is an exceptionally gifted intellectual. His academic tenure and career has been marked by brilliance and compassion. His multi-faceted skills in Ayurveda and modern medicine have brought about value-added results to his academics, career, service, and patient care. He leads the Home Care Team of Suraksha Palliative Care Centre.

Dr Shyam Raghavan is an exceptionally gifted intellectual. His academic tenure and career has been marked by brilliance and compassion. His multi-faceted skills in Ayurveda and modern medicine have brought about value-added results to his academics, career, service, and patient care. Education and Career:

Dr. Shyam Raghavan and his illustrious father Vaidyaratnam Dr Raghavan Ramankutty are alumni of the same institutions such as Kottayam Medical College and St Albert’s, and also products of the same teachers at these institutions. Shyam graduated with Distinction in medicine and surgery (M.B.B.S) from Kottayam Government Medical College. He was also House Surgeon at the same hospital. Thereafter, he successfully completed his 3-year postgraduate Diplomate of National Board General Surgery equivalent to MD/MS/DM/MCh degree in medical and surgical super specialities. DNB programmes are designed to provide in-depth training and expertise in specific medical and surgical specialities. During his DNB tenure at Little Flower Hospital and Research Centre, Angamaly, his team performed numerous orthopaedic surgeries and handled several accident cases. After clearing the exam for government service, he was appointed to Government Primary Health Centre in Thalassery and served for 9 years, and then Government Community Health Centre in Kalady. Such centres serve thousands of citizens and form a basic part of the healthcare system in India. From his first fibroadenoma surgery to herniorrhaphy, to complicated maxillofacial, fracture tibia, fracture femur, other orthopaedic surgeries, Dr Shyam’s goal remained to get patients back as close to former ways of functioning as possible.

Special Achievements:

Dr. Shyam is remembered to this day as the ‘bright, brilliant student’ at his medical college. He carried his special trait of giftedness throughout school, college, hospital and every health institution he subsequently served. Suturing is one of the most difficult basic technical skills in surgery, required hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and precision to place evenly spaced stitches with equal tension to achieve good approximation of tissue. There is also an underlying risk of infection. Dr Shyam’s expertise and gift with simple and mattress suturing was such that sutures performed by him never got infected, and he was specially summoned and engaged for this purpose.

Public Service:

Dr. Shyam’s relationship with patients was based on compassion far beyond a mere professional calling. He was well known among the local populace for being a sincere, gifted practitioner who preferred to use his gifts to better others’ lives. There was no dearth of persons who preferred getting their babies inoculated by Dr Shyam than paediatricians. His practise focused on addressing not only medical aspects but also personal and financial worries of patients. Dr Shyam’s penchant for philanthropy was such that earnings from his hobby of antique trading would be donated to the needy. Gifted with a rich sense of humour, he as quickly dispensed the ‘best medicine’ that was laughter, as he did medical and other assistance. His bright career witnessed a profusion of charitable works and goodness in thought, word and deed to the needy.

His Father’s Son:

Dr. Shyam’s father Dr. Raghavan admits fondly that more patients thronged his son than himself. While his father’s norm was to prescribe Kashayam (herbal water extracts) to be prepared by patients at home, Dr. Shyam when re-approached by them, would provide counter-prescriptions issuing prepared medicines free or at highly reduced rates. When father and son presented seminars, Dr. Shyam always made it a point to introduce his father to the audience in the most heart-warming manner, and without a wish for name or fame for himself would be quick to pave the way for his father’s address. A true son of his father, Dr.Shyam embodies the brilliance, charisma, charm, skill, intelligence, and most importantly the selfless heart of his lineage particularly his ever-so-kind and generous grand-father Shri Ramankutty, into his life and practise.
